Hiking Central High Atlas mountains 8 days.

The valley of Ait Bougmez, still called the Happy Valley, is one of the greenest natures in High Atlas mountains Morocco. The starting point of this hike is located 250 km east of Marrakech. Traditions and the pace of life of the inhabitants there are immutable, and the impressive architecture of the villages is the most beautiful in the Atlas. Happy Valley is a fertile synclinal for cultivation. Pastoral life continues there in the shade of century-old walnut trees in favor of this region. This hike takes place in populated valleys prepared high Kasbah where the slope is less serious (high shelf and deep valley, impressive yet narrow gorges). This is an opportunity for you to explore more closely the Berber civilization.

 

DAY 1: Arrival 

to Marrakech, reception at the airport and transfer to the hotel.

DAY 2: Marrakech – Ait Boully – Rougoulte

Departure towards the valley of Ait Boully on 4 WDs. Meeting with the muleteers, loading luggage on the mules, 2 hours walk to the village of Rougoulte. Night stay in a camp (2000 m).

DAY 3: Rougoulte – Col de Rougoulte – Idrhmamne

Start the day with climbing Akka-n-Daghour through the basalt and shale formations, passing by sheepherding fields. Arrival to the passage of Rougoulte (2900m). Cherish the panoramic descent of Tassaoute valley to the bivouac (2500m).

DAY 4: Idoughmamne – Asdrem – Tarkeddite Plateau

We begin the day climbing a winding path on the passage of Asdrem (3200m) in High Atlas mountains where a view of the M’goun chains is charming. Next, we cross a Plateau inhabited by nomads. We will continue to Tarkeddite Plateau at 2950m. 5/6 h walk. Night stay in a camp (Or Gite if it is very cold).

DAY 5: Tarkeddite – Mgoun 4068 m – 2600 m Oulilimte

Early in the morning, set off towards the Mgoun summit (4068 m) the second in High Atlas mountains, the embracing trail exhibits signs of the last glaciations of the Quaternary, panoramic views over the plateaus of the South Sahara and orientation tables on the summits of the surrounding mountains. Follow the descent to the Assif of Oulilimte. Night stay in a camp (2700 m). 8/9 hours walk.

The climb remains optional; anyone not feeling comfortable about making the climb can follow the trail of the mules with a guide. 4 h walk.

DAY 6: Oulilimte – Aflafal

Walk along the Assif of Oulilimte leaving smooth walls of massif limestone on the right side with a beautiful landscape of variably colored clay on the left. Check for small caves and busy sheepfolds on the way. Night stay at Ain Aflafal (2250 m). 4-5 hours walking.

DAY 7: Ain Aflafal – Ait Imi

We leave the upstream Assif Mgoun, climb through an open path towards the Ait Imi passage (2905 m). A panoramic view prevails on both north-south valley and the chain of Waougouklzate. Then, down to the first village of the Happy Valley of Ait Bougmez (1900m). Later, we cross a large part of the valley of Ait Bougmez, its fields and crops, mud villages with attractive architecture, and ancient dinosaur tracks. Tea and night stay with locals.

DAY 8: Ait Bougmez – Marrakech, 240 km

Night spent in a hotel.

3 daily liters of water per person.

All meals.

An English, French, Arabic, and Berber speaking guide.

A Cook

Muleteers and mules.

Tents Igloo of 3 places for 2 people.

A kitchen tent and another tent for toilet.

A thick foam mattress per person. The bivouacs at night are usually next to a water point.
