Mgoun Mountains (15 days)

 

DAY 01: Arrival to Marrakech.

Night stay at the hotel or Riad in the heart or the read city our m’goun hiking trip starts on the next day.

DAY 2: Marrakech – Ait Bougmez Valley.

Transport by mini-bus to the Happy Valley of Ait Bouguemez via Azilal where (possibility to visit Ouzoud waterfalls), dinner and night at Gite or with some Ait Ziri (1800 m) locals.

DAY 3: Ait Ziri – Abachkou

Load luggage on mules, wander around the western part of the Valley and continue towards the neighboring Valley of Ait Boully. Night stay in a bivouac at Abachkou (1800 m). 5 to 6 hours walk.

DAY 4: Abachkou – Agourram-n-Tfira

Continue through the Valley of the Ait Boully in a trail shaded by big walnut trees. The flanks of the mountain are often covered with chainais and junipers. Walk on along the River and discover the villages and purely volcanic mountains. Night stay in Agourram-n-Tfira (2450 m). 4-5 hours walking.

DAY 5: Agourram-n-Tfira – Idoughmamane

Climb up towards the Rougoulte col (2920 m) and notice walls covered with cushion of a high altitude, then go down to the bivouac of Idoughmamne. In the afternoon, visit to the famous Gorge of Wandrass (Tassaoute ouflla). Night stay in the bivouac (2600 m). 4-5 hours walking.

DAY 6: Idoughmamane – Tarkeddite Plateau

Follow the rising trail through (up to 3200 m) continue till you reach the plateau frequented by nomads. Mgoun chain is clearly visible by now. Stay in a bivouac on the Tarkeddite plateau near refuge (2950 m). 6 hours walking.

DAY 7: Tarkeddite – Summit Mgoun – Oulilimte

Early in the morning, set off towards the Mgoun summit (4068 m), the embracing trail exhibits signs of the last glaciations of the Quaternary, panoramic views over the plateaus of the South Sahara and orientation tables on the summits of the surrounding mountains. Follow the descent to the Assif of Oulilimte. Night stay in a camp (2700 m). 8 to 9 hours walk.

The climb remains optional; anyone not feeling comfortable about making the climb can follow the trail of the mules with a guide. 4 h walk.

Day 8: Oulilimte – Ain Aflafal

Walk along the Assif of Oulilimte leaving smooth walls of massif limestone on the right side with a beautiful landscape of variably colored clay on the left. Check for small caves and busy sheepfolds on the way. Night stay at Ain Aflafal (2250 m). 4-5 hours walking.

DAY 9: Ain Aflafal – Imin-Irkht

Follow the opening near the Valley of Tighremt N’Ait Hmad where you begin trekking on the Valley of Ouzirimte, a series of nested villages in Pisa, with a remarkable ethnic and aesthetic variety (Clothing and Hairstyle). It is possible to stop by for tea with the inhabitants of the village. Dinner at Imin-Irkht. 5h to 6h walking.

DAY 10: Imin-Irkht – Tighanimine

Walking on water along Oued Mgoun surrounded by its limestone folding walls forming beautiful gorges getting higher and narrower especially near Achaabou (Have sneakers ready). Stop in a bivouac at the exit from the Canyons towards the place Tighanimine.

DAY 11: Tighanimine – Ighrem Akdime

Another day walking on water, but sometimes the trails pass in the middle of the plots on the terrace. Some houses are on the side of the mountain. Finish the day in the famous Valley of the Ait Mraw and spend the night with a local in Ighrem Akdime.

DAY 12: Ighrem Akdime – Kelaat Mgouna – Ait Ben Haddou

A 4 WDs ride to Ouarzazate through the Valley of the roses and Kelaa Mgouna, visit to the Kasbah of Amrehdile in Skoura. Continue to Ouarzazate, then a tour in Ait Ben Haddou, world declared heritage. Night stay in a hotel.

DAY 13: Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech

On the way back, we can follow the Ounila Valley, visit the wonderful Kasbah of Glaoui in Telouet, and follow the paved road till Tichka (2260 m) and on to reach Marrakech.

DAY 14: Guided tour in Marrakech.

DAY 15: Transfer to the airport.
